I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it has 88, 00 miles, and it's a V8 with AWD. Just recently, our Jeep has had problems starting. At first, when we turned the key, it would take about 5 seconds before it would fire up. It did that for about a week or two and then it went away for a while. It was fine for about 3 weeks. The other day, we turned the key and it just made a click sound and wouldn't fire. We tried multiple times and it would just click once. I tried starting it up the next day and it fired right up and I drove it around for a while. Turned it on and off a few times, worked fine. I had the battery tested, it was fine, the alternator, it was fine. The very next day, I got in to go in the morning, I just got the click sound when I turned the key, couldn't get it started. Do you have any thoughts on what it might be?

In the event that the battery is original, replace it. I would start by carefully checking all the battery cable attachment points for tightness and evidence of corrosion. IF it looks good take a hammer and tap on the starter while someone holds the key in the crank position. IF still no luck, post a reply. If you find something also post a reply.

When I went to have the battery checked, it looked fine and tested out fine. There weren't signs of corrosion but I stilled cleaned the terminals just in case. The Jeep has been starting lately but it has done this in the past and then all of a sudden, it won't start again, I'll turn the key and just get the click. If it doesn't start again, I'll tap the starter with a hammer. Can you explain where the starter is though. I've looked for it but haven't been able to find it. Thanks!

There is a heavy wire that goes down to the starter, make sure that connection and the ground connection the goes to the body from the negative post is also clean and tight.

The starter is on the passenger side where the transmission meets the engine.
