I have a 97 Grand Cherokee Jeep I service it always on time. Tonight on my was home it didnt seem to want to shift into gears it is an automantic it has 150,000 miles on her. In drive it would only go about 25 to 39miles and hour. So I went into 2nd and it would only go about 29 to 25 when I got home and turned her off it smelled hot. I packed it out side of the carport. Help me Patricia M

USUALLY WHEN AN AUTOMOBILE IS SERVICED, THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SERVICE. THEREFORE IT COULD POSSIBLY BE A NEGLECTED TRANSMISSION. DID YOU MANUALLY PLACE THE CAR IN 2ND GEAR TO GET HOME? MANUALLY PLACED WITH THE GEAR SHIFTER WOULD PREVENT THE TRANSMISSION FROM REACHING 3RD GEAR HENCE THE LOW MPH YOU WERE ABLE TO OBTAIN. WITH THE ENGINE COLD, CK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL. IF THE LEVEL IS IN THE CROSSHATCHED SECTION OF THE STICK AND THE FLUID IS RED WITH NO SMELL, IT IS NORMAL. BUT WITH WHAT YOU DESCRIBED, I WOULD SAY THE FLUILD IS LOW, BROWN, AND SMELLS BURNT. YOU WILL NEED A TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE AND LUCK. IF THIS DOESNT IMPROVE THEN MAJOR TRANSMISSION WORK IS LIKELY.

Hey Patricia,
Jeeps and Chyrsler transmissions will go into a"limp in" mode if there is a problem detected by the TCM(trans control module) and yours is in it! I strongly recommend you take it to a professional and get it properly diagnosed before any permanent damage occurs!

Regards,

Chris
