Engine dies intermittently while driving

What could cause a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. 4.0 six cyl, 63 K miles these problems:

1. Engine dies while cruising, I have to pull on the side of the road, put it on park turn ignition off and restart. Most of the time it will start again and drive as if nothing happen. I use it mostly on short trip, errand no more that 40 minutes drive. This happened about a dozen time in the last six month.
Also noticed a few times when I am executing a turn (my foot off the accelerator) and that’s when the engine dies.

2. Also after several minutes drive, if I stop and turn the engine off, sometimes it will not start, it will crank but it wont fire as if there is no fuel or spark. After the engine cools off, it will start and run normal again. This does not happen all the time.

I don’t know if this will help trouble shoot the problem above - seven months ago I took my Jeep for a E-22 recall (reprogram PCM and inspect catalytic converter) to a local dealer. After reprogramming the computer emission, my check engine light came on, dealer turn it off the next day. After a few days check engine light came on again. I just ignore it for the next six month and during this time that the above problem occur. I finally bought a OBD II Code reader and found that there is a P0420 (catalyst efficiency below threshold). After complaining to the Jeep Dealer they agree that the catalytic converter has to be replaced as part of the recall. After replacing the converter the problem still there, as a matter of fact, driving home from the dealer the truck die twice and I hold traffic. I stop by at Toys Rus, I came out a few minutes the truck will not start for 45 minutes. After it started, it seems that every time I hit a stop light it feels like the engine is starving of fuel and like to die on me unless I kept the rpm above 1200 with my right foot and brake on the left foot. There is no trouble code on the computer and check engine light is not on.

Any suggestion on where to look for will be appreciated.

Sincerely,

After reading a bunch of Jeep Forum I narrow the problem to a faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor. $68 fr. Auto Zone. I've been driving it for three days now & it has'nt stall yet.
Now removing and installing the CKS is not a piece of cake. There is not much room between the bell housing and the body were the sensor is located and to make matter worse the transmission shifter cable is sitting on top of it. There is two thing that could be done: 1. Lower the transmission a few inches by unbolting the cross member and jack it down 4 to 6 inches. 2. Use a pneumatic ratchet with a 11 mm socket and with a small hand the single bolt came off easily. Installing the new sensor takes some imagination and occasional sip of Michelob Ultra Umber to keep your cool!
Hope this help for you folks with a similar Jeep problem.
