Auto Transmission Trouble

Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Litre 1993, 165000 miles. Transmission fluid and filter recently changed. Car will not change into 1st gear unless selected. Seems to be pulling away in 2nd gear. Changes ok into 3rd and then won't change into top gear until very late. Is this terminal?

Problems started a few weeks after changing fluid etc. I think to begin with problem showed with the transmission taking a long time to change into top gear. Also I think about the same time, the car seemed to start off in 2nd. As of yesterday it now seems to be starting off in 3rd. I can manually select the gears and move though them without any trouble.
