1996 Jeep Cherokee with 263,000 miles. Solid workhorse until today. About 5,000 miles ago, I noticed the transmission shifting funny. Simultaneously, the alternator was dying. I replaced the alternator and new battery - all was well. Also had transmission fluid changed as routine maintenance. Just a few days ago, I again noticed the transmission shifting funny again. The alternator gauge is in the normal range. While driving today, the rpm's rev up and I notice the vehicle is no longer powered by transmission. I pull over the side of road and hear a ticking noise with vehicle running. I checked the fluid and it's full. After waiting 10 minutes, I started the vehicle and put it in gear. I moved it 5 feet but didn't want to leave the safe parking spot. Could the transmission finally be going or is there an electronic device screwing things up? Your thoughts most appreciated.
