2000 Jeep Cherokee Engine Light and Slipping

My Grand Cherokee was driving fine and then the engine light came on and would not go off even with restarting the car. We checked the oil, transmission fluid, etc and everything was fine. What could be wrong? And also when you are driving and start slowing down to make a stop then as the car is shifting down around the last shift then it jerks, why is it doing this? We just bought the car and is wondering why it is doing this and if we made the correct car choice.

Have it scanned for codes as that will pin point the troubled area
and help in diagnosing the issue
also u can get the codes by performing self diagnose

u can do so by cycling the ignition key on off three times ending with key on
read P codes in the odometer area
