2000 Jeep Cherokee Engine Warning Light

My engine warning light came on after city driving for 20 min. Right before the light came on, I was idling for 10 min. Also, I was accelerating when the light came on. I stopped the car for 10 min. And turned it back on, and the light was still on. What is that about?

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine manangement system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.
