My grand cherokee 4.7 V8 check engine light came on after I was driving at 90KLM on the highway. The engine light came on and the engine died out, I thought it stalled but when I stopped it was running but sputtering. I could only go 10 KLM no matter how much gas I gave it, even right to the floor it didn't matter. I then drove it to the nearest house and my muffle came off and it stunk bad. I then shut the truck restarted it and it was fine, like nothing happened, But the engine light stays on now. I had to put a new clamp for the muffle and so far the truck runs like normal except like I said the check engine light stays on. So far I have used this site for three different problems and you's have been right every time so please help me again Thanks.

The check engine light indicates that the computer has stored a trouble code that will identify where the problem came from. I'm a little confused what caused the muffler to come off. Did it backfire? It almost sounds like something was plugging the exhaust.

Regardless, have the computer scanned and let me know what you find. Many nationally recognized parts stores will scan it for free.

Let me know what you find.

Well yes it backfired and after driving the jeep for a couple of days with the check engine light on, it finaly wouldn"t start and when it did it kept backfiring and ran very bad. I had it towed and checked, I had to replace the 02 senser and crank senser both codes came up. I had these two sensers replaced and it was perfect for about 2 days and then the check engine light came back on. I brought it back and now the code is reading the cataletic convertor. It must be plugged I guess I wonder if this led to to the other problems. Since I paid my Jeep off a year ago the warrenty ended and I spent $6,000 in repairs. It seems like evey week there is something new. I only have 226000klm. I might look for a new vehicle but my luck I sell it or trade it in the person could be trouble free for a long time as I have replaced and repaired so many things. Well thanks again and have a good one. It runs perfect even with the check engine light on, and if the cat convertor was plugged would it still run great like it is, and how long do I have until I need to change. Is it possible the computer is mis reading because of the new 02 senser.
