Odometer 50,000 - Automatic
No problems until this morning, but I've only had this car two months. I put the Key in the ignition and turn to start, head lamps turn on bright - radio - instrumentation - interior lights all good. Several loud clicks from what I think may be the selinoid engaging but the engine will not turn over. When I release the key there is a 1 to 2 second winding down buzzing sound.
I tried starting it quite a few times today without success and just now it started. However I do not want to get stuck somewhere. What do you suspect before I take it in or if it happens again?

Hi there,

It sounds like the starter motor is faulty, the loud click should be the solenoid engaging, but the starter is obviously not engaging, the whirling noise could be that the starter is actually turning with out fully engaging, so I would have the starter motor inspected as soon a possible.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I have this same problem with an `03 X-Type. Once every three weeks or so out of the blue it just clicks when trying to start. I don't think it's the starter cause if I jump the solenoid with a screw driver it turns over and starts, so that would eliminate the starter motor. I`ve tried jumper cables between the battery neg post and the block with the same results, just clicks. Running a test light to the positive cable on the starter or starter excite wire or alternator + shows a pulsating while clicking and trying to crank.
I'm thinking it must be a bad connection somewhere, but were to look? I've cleaned the connections between the battery and tranny, battery and body, all looked virtually brand new with no corrosion.
Thanks for any insight and suggestions.

*EDIT*
battery load tests fine showing 10.5v while under load for 10 secs, but if I jump start it or throw the charger on it fires right up.
