Car stalling when put into gear

I have a 98 Isuzu Amigo with 98,000 miles. It is an automatic and has 4 wheel drive. The problem is that about 10% of the time that I start the truck it seems a bit sluggish. I start it and it is running, then when I go to put it in gear (either reverse or drive), it cuts off. I restart no problem and it happens again. I've noticed that when I shut off the AC I have a better chance of it staying started and going into gear. Typicallyl I have to wait a few minutes and try it again before I am able to put it into gear and go. This is only happening to me and not my son or my boyfriend. They think that I am doing something wrong and have even suggested that I'm not turning the key far enough. However it always starts, so I know thats not the problem. Please help so they don't continue to think that I'm a dumb blonde! Others have suggested that this could be the alternator or the mass air flow sensor.

Try to hold the gas pedal down slighty when putting the truck in gear if it doesn t stall it may be the idle controll motor what makes me think this is the ac put extra load on the engine and you say it don t stall with it off. But again at 98k this could also be a timing belt / chain

If TopDog's suggestion doesn't fix the problem, you may want to check the air and fuel filters and change them if needed, the fuel pump could be going out, or the injectors may be dirty. Just a couple other things to look into. I would change the filters, and run some injector cleaner through the system. I would also check the plugs. Check the small "cheaper" things before anything else. Good luck
