The ignition doesn't spring back from "Start" to "On" when you release the key while starting, you have to turn the key back yourself after the vehicle starts.

My questions are:

1. Where is the spring that does this? Is this a lock tumbler problem or is it a problem in the switch?

2. If it's just the switch and not the tumblers and I swap just the switch out with one that I find at a wrecker yard, do I have to do any reprogramming with the security fob?

3. If it is in the switch, is there a way to take it apart and fix it myself rather than replace it with one from a wrecking yard?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hi,

Any time you have an issue with the turning of the key it is the ignition switch portion. Normally they get stuck in a position but not returning is most likely the spring. Unfortunate thing is that I am not aware of a way to repair it. Here is the procedure on how to replace it and I think your only option is to get a repair kit because you have to drill a hole to get it out so you would need to do this to the used one as well. Plus the kit to replace it is just as cheap as a used one these days.

I also included the procedure on how to code the cylinder as well.

Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks

I bought a new switch and put it in no problem. However the relearn procedure isn’t working. I turn the key on and attempt to start then leave it in the on position for well over half an hour and the security telltale on the dash never goes away. Now I’m bummed. What’s the problem? Why doesn’t the relearn work? It’s the same key and lock cylinder from before. One thing to note is that the key and lock cylinder have been replaced previously because the ignition key doesn’t match the doors. But it was working before.

Actually I figured out the ignition switch. I had bent the contacts on the connector on the lock cylinder. All good now. Didn’t even need to relearn.
