I could not locate the transmission on my Santa Fe. According to the VIN, the filter is an external spin-on type. The vehicle was built in January 2003.
Does the car require an external filter, internal filter, or none?
What fluid type do I need to use to flush with new fluid? Does it have to be Hyundai or can it meet or exceed their specs?

Thanks,
Charley

This is the fluid spec it requires Genuine Diamond ATF SP III.

As far as the filter. It appears it came either way. The dealer should be able to tell you from the VIN#.`

Thanks for the information. I will re-check at the dealer. If I find out that it has indeed an internal filter, will that be a straight removal as would be the case for a typical transmission filter and gasket replacement?
As for the fluid type, if I do not use the recommended, will this cause premature wear of the internal components? I have seen other fluid manufacturers' suitable substitutes.

Do not use any fluid that does not meet that specification. That could cost you a transmission.
If it has an internal filter, then you do not want to even think about changing that. It is 8.8 hours on a 2WD and 10.8 hours on an AWD.

Want to change transmission filter on my 2003 santa fe. I was told at the auto parts store it requires a spin on type filter. I bought the filter and I can't find where it is located on the vehicle. Can you help?

Hi:
In 2002, they stopped using the external filter. However, based on when your vehicle was built, it may still have one. If you look next to the trans dipstick tube, on top of the trans case you will see the filter or you will see just a spot where the filter use to go before they eliminated it. If the trans does not have the external filter ontop then there is no service to the filter to be done. The only recommendation is to take the vehicle into a shop to have the fluid flushed. By the way, make sure you use the correct Hyundai SP-III trans fluid (not dexron/mercon). This fluid is specific to the Hyundai and can not be purchased from auto parts stores, only the dealership. Failure to use SP-III will cause premature wear to the internal bands and clutches.

Let me know if this helps.
Joe

DESCRIPTION:

Hyundai has deleted the external oil filter (P/N 46322-39000) on all Elantra, Sonata, Santa Fe and XG300 transaxies effective with the production dates listed below. These transaxies are equipped with an internal oil filter that needs to be changed only during transaxle overhaul.

On a normal transmission you have to drop the pan to access the filter. When you look at a new filter, you will see that it sits inside the pan, and it will likely come with a new pan gasket. Some of these cars do not have a filter you might have one of them.

REPLACEMENT
If you have a fluid changer, use this changer to replace the fluid. If you do not have a fluid changer, replace the fluid using following procedure.
1. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the transaxle case to drain the fluid.
2. Install the drain plug and gasket, and tighten to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 32 Nm (320 kg-cm, 23 ft. lbs.)
3. Pour the new fluid in through the oil filler tube.

CAUTION: Stop pouring if the full volume of fluid cannot be poured in.

4. Repeat the procedure in step 1 if too much fluid was added.
5. Firmly replace the oil level gauge.
6. Start the engine and run it at idle for 1 - 2 minutes.
7. Move the select lever through all positions, and then move it to the N position.
8. Drive the vehicle until the fluid temperature rises to the normal temperature (70 - 80°C), and then check the fluid level again. The fluid level must be at the HOT Mark.

I do not see a filter. I looked the filter up on rockauto. Com, and they list four different filters. Only one of them is a spin-on filter. The other three are internal and are all very different.

I am going to try to get another expert involved who should be able to help solve the mystery for you.

Hello Ken, I already had to work around it. I wanted to remove the RTV on the oil pan cover, this is why I wanted to completely take the pan off, but space was not enough so I had to remove it eh RTV in place. Thanks for answering though
