02 Elantra with 188K, and a five speed. Service engine light was on, car did not want to start after putting gas in tank. Filled two weeks ago and car refused to start. When started finally. Car cut out and engine shut off and on randomly. I replaced the Purge Control Valve and service engine light came off. But the rough idle and the jerking continues. When the car goes through this the tach goes to zero and the service engine light flashes and then the car catches itself and continues. Without an active error code, I am at a loss. Any ideas?

Has the timing belt been replaced? If so how many miles are on it? Cam crank signal may be a problem, or a slipped belt, by a tooth or two. Compression test, spark and fuel test as well one of the three is missing when it doesnt start.
