My car has problems starting occasionally in two ways. The first is when the starter motor turns over but the engine doesn't fire up. The second is when it does fire up, the revs go to about 1500 and then the car suddenly stalls. Then it will turn over but not fire up. Sometimes it will fix itself and start after 2 - 10 minutes. Slamming the hood can work, which makes me think it's a connection, but if so, why does it start then stall?

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks!

I have a 1999 elantra and have had similar issues. After investigating I did find that there was a recall for the connector on the mass air flow sensor, this may be worth looking into.As far as my car it end up that the connector for the tps (throttle position sensor)had worked itself loose(this could also be your problem).
Two other possibilities are the crank & cam angle sensors.I would look at the MAF and the TPS first.
here is a good site to look at for repair info and how to.
