I recently took out the vehicle listed above from CarMax. Three days after purchase I noticed when turning the wheel to the left it will make a moderate humming/rubbing noise but turning the wheel right it is quiet. Other than the sound there is no vibration or anything in that nature. Could there be a cause for this? I will be taking the car to an alignment shop Monday. Thanks In advance.

I suspect this is something in the power steering system. I attached a bit of information on this because it is not the conventional system. It is similar components but they are controlled electronically.

No matter what it is, I would not take it anywhere but back to CarMax. They have a minimum of a 30 day warranty so I would make sure they fix it for you.

Here is a guide on the common causes of these types of noises but again, I am not sure this will cover what this is doing. The fact that it is only in one direction points me to the steering system. It could just be something rubbing but again no matter what it is I would make sure they take care of it for you.

Let me know if you have questions or if you are outside their warranty, we can dig deeper. If it is covered, let us know what it was. Thanks

Update:

I ended up scheduling an appointment at the CarMax service department on January 7th due to the humming noise. The mechanic diagnosed the noise without physically looking at the car but went by what he can hear on the test drive we took. The mechanic diagnosed the noise as a rear differential Problem, stating when the fluid gets dirty Build up will begin to appear and a noise could be heard, but the car only has about 47,000 miles but a drain and fill was done and also friction modifier was used. The mechanic stated the noise would go away within time when the differential fluid would soak into the gears. It’s been about 3 weeks later and the noise is still the same. I’m more than sure the noise is coming from the front end of the car. The noise can be really heard on a cold start when I’m turning the wheel and pressing the gas lightly. I did reschedule another appointment with the CarMax service department on January 27. What could be the issue with this? And also the noise is not in only one direction, it could be heard turning either side in reverse or in drive.

I don't know but please make sure you continue to take it back to them. Just from my experience they have a tendency to send people off saying things will get better in hopes they don't come back or go somewhere else. Not saying all CarMax's are that way but they don't make money making repairs to the vehicles they sell.

As for figuring it out, if you want to try to help them determine what it is, put the vehicle on four jack stands so you can put it in drive and turn the wheel, to see if the noise is there with no load on the tires. If it is, then you can get all around and under the car to try and figure this out. If it doesn't make the noise with no load on the tires, then it is most likely a bearing. Could be in the pump but we need to try to limit this down and this is the best way I know to do that.
