Can you please elaborate on the erratic rev?

Is the Check Engine Lamp showing?

Was any repairs done prior to this happening?

The light does not show on the panel. I have only had the car for a few weeks now so I don't know if any repairs have been done on it/ I think the rev limiter might be problematic - it kicks in too early. I can get a fair amount of speed from all the gears, but just to have the rev limiter kick in as soon as you try to overtake, accelerating on the freeway.

Without any codes if the rev limiter, the most likely cause of your problem could be the Throttle Position Sensor.

Get it checked or recalibrated if work had been done on it before. Check the throttle cable adjustment as well.
