Air conditioning fan

I have a 1999 Honda Civic 2dr- Dx model with 114,000 miles. Over the summer the car makes a noise when you turn on the air conditioner. It sounds like a loud muffler- which I replaced last year. It has been getting louder in past few days. The noise is also louder when the car is idle. While driving it is not that loud.

Maybe the AC compressor is on its way out/failing or the condenser fan rubbing against the housing.
