Hello,

My 2000 Honda Civic LX (4D) has been having some issues with a screeching or groaning sound upon engine start. It seems that the issue typically goes away after startup. There are two instances when I hear this sound:

1. Cold Starts - Engine tachometer is at around 1500 rpm, and there is a moderately loud screeching/groaning sound coming from the engine, unable to determine a component or general area where it's coming from. Putting pressure on the throttle to 1700+ RPM seems to get rid of this sound - wondering if it's just causing resonance somewhere under the hood?

2. With the car in "D" and the brake pedal depressed (in other words, in Drive, not going anywhere), there's a slight squeaking/screeching noise. This seems to last through the entire trip - but ONLY when the car is not moving anywhere - the sound goes away when you're moving.

Unrelated, but also:

3. There's also some squeaking sounds as I'm driving hitting very small inclines and declines in the road surface (not potholes or anything like that) and whatnot that's recently come up in the last year or so, kind of sounds like a worn out mattress. Wondering if this could hint at new shocks?

Fluid levels for Oil, Brake, Transmission, Coolant, and Power Steering are at acceptable levels between the minimum, and if applicable, the maximum.

About 6 months ago I had a "three belt changeover" done, which did not include the timing belt. I also replaced the distributor, which was noticeably worn, and spark plugs.

Car has been very well maintained including dealer yearly service, and timely oil changes.

Looking forward to your recommendations - thanks!
Hoping this car lasts a little bit longer, waiting for Subaru to come out with a better look for the Impreza line. Not too impressed with the `08's.

Update: It's been pretty warm here in the Northeast for the last few days, and with the change in temperature (from around 25-30F to around 55-65F) I've noticed that this groan doesn't occur. Interesting.

Could be something related to thermodynamics shrinking, and thereby tighening, the belts.
