2000 Honda Civic 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

My check engine light came on this morning. My mechanic thinks that I didn't put the gas cap on tight enough when I bought gas yesterday. Could it really be this simple and will the light go out on its own? The car is running fine.

Hi burrowoman,

Yes, it is possible but if the light comes back on, then you need to get a scan to find out the cause.

Yes it is that simple. I did the same thing to my civic once. Open the gas cap up let it sit for a second and then put it back on until it clicks a couple of times. If the light is still coming on afterwards it usually means something to do with emissions.
