I'm looking at buying a 2000 Honda Civic 2-door coupe with 119000 miles. The Civic accelerates well and shifts smooth. I'm in love with this car. My question releates to the check engine light being on.

The car idles fine without the AC running, but when the air cond. Is turned on. The idle drops down real low - almost as if the engine is going to die.

I don't have a code scanner. I do know I can have the codes read by a mechanic. Its a real hassle getting the car to the auto parts store.

I guess what I'm looking for is a worst case scenario for this year and model of honda civic. With everything I've mentioned about the accelleration, handling, AC blowing Cold, and the low idle, is this year and model know for expensive repairs regarding the check engine light?

Thanks.

Hi daveisageek, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation

If its driveable-Go to Autozone its a free public service and have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on

Could be possible that there's a problem with an idle up solenoid that's not increasing the engine speed due to the load of the compressor causing it to idle low-You still need to scan the computer

The 2000 honda civic drives so well, if the check engine light wasn't on, there would be no indication of a problem. It was the seller who pointed out the eng idle dropping when the AC compr. Was turned on.

A friend, a disinterested party who has sold cars for 6 years says to never buy a car with a CEL on. He hasn't seen or driven this Civic.

I'm conflicted. Without scanning the cmptr to get the code which caused the CEL and acknowledging the idle solenoid being the cause fir the CEL, is the cost of repair for the idle solenoid costly?

Thanks
