What causes rear brakes to lock up? Brake indicator light had been on and when brakes started locking up we filled with brake fluid and light is no longer on, however rear brakes are locking up

Hi vlandin627,

One of the causes is due to ineffective front brakes. Either the pads are not gripping or the calipers are seized causing excessive to be sent to the rear brakes to lock them up. Check the front caliper sliding bolts.

If your vehicle is equipped with rear brake drums, slave cylinder leakages can cause the brakes to lock up. Brake fluid contaminating the brake shoes would cause the shoes to stick to the drums while braking.

If equipped with ABS, a faulty master pump would cause the brakes to lock. The ABS light would most probably have been showing for quite some time.

Those without ABS might have a faulty PCV valve.
