1998 Honda Civic EX A/C Clutch faulty? Replacement?

Continually blew fuse 56 whenever the A/C system was turned on.

- Ruled out relays and the condenser fan.
- Reistance through coil (from wire after therm. protector and compressor housing) was 4.8 ohms, which is higher than spec.
- I then jumpered it directly to the battery (12V). It sparked and now i get no resistance reading from it at all.

My questions:
1) Did I just finish off the failing coil, or have I done some damage to something else?

2) Can I replace the coil without removing the compressor and opening the system?

Hi there,

It sounds as if the coil has shorted and is now burnt out. You should be able to replace the Assembly with out opening the system, but you may find that there is a special puller needed to do this.

Thanks for confirming the coil, but mostly I was hoping that someone might be able to confirm whether or not it is possible to replace the assembly without removing the compressor (opening the system).

It seems that if I were to remove the inner fender wall and the washer fluid bottle and maybe loosen some other accessory brackets, that it might be possible.

**Can anyone confirm this procedure for the vehicle (98 civic EX)?
**Confirm the need for a puller, or space to use it?

Hi gsea,

It is possible to replace the clutch without discharging the system.

Removal of the alternator and power steering pump would make the job easier.
