OK
So I bought a civic and it has a bad CVT the variable transmission, I got HOSED but that's another story!

The transmission surges till about 45 mph, during deceleration (when I slow to a stop the rpm's surge and the car seems like its going to stall but when I put it in neutral its fine and it surges till about 45 miles per hour during acceleration. My mechanic says to buy a used one (transmission) or replace the starter clutch, starter control valve and the TCM. My understanding is all of this would be the price of a new one, is that so? No more money to buy another used car, I'm trying not to stress about the $$. So many people are comming at me with what to do, now I'm confused.

Please help me, with your best advice,

Thanks in advance

My question is how much should it cost to rebuild my transmission.
My mechanic says the parts to be replaced are; start clutch assembly, start clutch control valve and the TCM control unit. This rebuild information was taken off the internet based on the symptoms. The idle fluctuates between 500 and 1500 RPM's when engine cold, it shudders when accelerating from a stop and slowing down to stop. It feels like the car will stall when in drive when the car is stopped st a light.
It states 6 hours labor but no prices for the parts.

Do you have a check engine light or has flashed-if so get the computer scanned for code/s

A badly needed major tune-up will affect the operaton of the transmission. At park position while engine is idling the transmission should not caused the idle to surge. I recommend you have the fuel pressure, idle air control valve and throttle position sensor checked out
