I recently begin hearing a loud screech or grinding coming from my distributor. After speaking with my father he mentioned that the shaft that spins the rotor may not be receiving oil from the valve cover and will make such a sound. As such, he recommended I apply a small bit of oil to the shaft and see if the noise goes away. After I completed this the noise did disappear. Further, he mentioned wherever the oil gets into the distributor might be clogged and as such the shaft is not receiving oil. Does this sound accurate and if so where does the oil come into the distributor from the valve head? Can I simply take off the distributor and clean up the area and unplugged the port (if that is how this works, I am unsure)? Thank you for your help.

The oil just wick up shaft if slug or tarnish is on shaft this will keep oil from getting to shaft. You can try taking out (BE SURE TO HAVE ON TDC#1CYL AND MARK HOUSING TO HEAD AND ROTOR TO HOUSING POSITION) spraying some cabr cleaner
