Is the car not running quite as well as it used to? Does it seem not to have the power that it had? I am guessing that you are burning water. This is probably a head gasket problem and if not it is a head crack or warpage.

Some auto repair shops will inspect the head for warpage and cracking. They can usually plane the head and do all of this for about $80. Cost of a head gasket is minimal and you are back in business. I know there is some work in getting the head off. It takes me about and hour and 1/2 to do so.

You may want to get your mechanic to do a compression test or a leak down test to pin point your probem with your car losing coolant. Are you seeing any white smoke while you are driving the car. If so Bruce is right that either you have a blown head gasket or a damage cylinder head.
