1993 Honda Accord EX; 120,000 miles; 2.2L:

i just inherited this car and it has some interesting problems. The temp gauge takes a good 10 minutes to come to a normal position and when I drive at any speed over 40mph or so it drops all the way down to cold. I was thinking stuck thermostat but the heat works fine. It also gets fairly poor gas mileage -- about 18mpg. Tho I drive in the worst of seattle traffic every day so maybe that's not so bad. Thanks for any help

Is sounds like the thermastat might be stuck part way open. Replace thermastat. Is sounds like the car is putting out some heat. When the engine runs faster the anti freeze circulates faster cooling the engine back down. To check the guage. Take off
the wire that goes to the senduing unit for the temp guage and ground it have someone check the guage in the car and see if it goes to high when it is grounded.

Thanks. I replaced the thermostat--it was stuck open--and now the car runs smoothly and thankfully stopped clunking into gear (auto trans). Hopefully the gas mileage will also improve
