My automatic transmission was forced out of park and wont reingage. The ignition wont allow the key to come out as a result. Driving the car doesnt seem to have any problems. Is this an easy fix for the transmission?

Hi clintadams,

You must have damaged the interlock solenoid. Why didn't you use the key to unlock the interlock instead of forcing the lever?
Check if your brake lamps are working.

You need to remove the centre and rear console to get at the interlock solenoid.

I replaced the brake light swithc, which will now release the shifter from park, but I think that the shifter mechanism is damaged, it will not engage and disengaged smoothly and the key cannot be removed from the ignition. I think it's a mechanical issue versus electronic. Is there an easy way to fix the shifting mechanism?

If the gear shift interlock solenoid is not returned to its parked position, you cannot get the key out of the cylinder.

You need to check the solenoid pin which is most probably bent due to force. Straighten it out and the problem should be solved.
