Is a transmission repair a possibility or is a replacement the only alternative? The tranny appers to slip at time and bang at others?

Repairs are possible, remans are repaired transmission. Only problem with repairs is that it would take quite a while before you can get your car moving whereas a replacement can be completed in a day or 2.

Ensure the fluid level is correct and get a scan done to see if you have any trouble codes. It couls be a faulty solenoid which does not require removal of the transmission.

1998 accord, 130,000 miles, automatic, 4-cyl. When car is cold tranny works fine, as car heats up tranny will slip if rpm is under 1500. When tranny hot, if rpm below 1500 rpms, tranny slips no matter what gear you are in. Coming up from a stop I have to push accelerator above 1500 before engagement. Tranny fluid changed recently, didn't fix problem. What to do? Is it electronic or mechanical? Please advise. Backyard mechanic

When it is slipping, do you smell anything with a burning smell around the trans?

No burning smell. Also had an honest tranny mechanic rebuild transmission and torque converter. He aslo mentioned that he performed continuity checks on many sensors. When competed it did the same thing, and he did not want to spend any more time with it. He also dodn't charge me since he said he didn't fix problem. I've been thinking about buying a remanufactured tranny from company off internet, afraid if I swap it (and loose a lot of blood, backaches, and money) the same problem will occur. Took car to national transmission repair center, they said transmiision needs replacement even though honest guy said he just went through the whole thing. What should I do? Thanks for your reply. Do this, if you can get access to a scanner find out what codes are in the computer. May have to check for dtcs in the bcm for this. Your tranny friend may be able to do that, and we can go from there. Don't replace the tranny again. Codes such as p1738 or p1739 may be present.

AFTER you do that, remove both battery cables, hold away from the battery and touch the together for a few minutes. Honda recommends this to helps clear up any software glitchs by draining the capacitors.

There is a tsb on shift problems that call for replacing the a/t clutch pressure control solenoid A/B assy. IT doesn't offer a testing procedure but to replace it as the test! Gotta love it

Do the oil and filter and a scan for any unresolved fault codes first.

Filter is in transmission and non serviceable. Replacement means stripping the transmission bare.

Is the fluid level correct and condition of fluids good?

I was driving for about 1 mile and when I got to a light and tried to take off. The engine just revved and wouldn't move no matter what gear I was in. So I pushed the car into a gas station and tried to start the car again. The car started without any trouble and I could drive it again. So, I decided to try to head home and I made it about another mile and the car just started to rev, RPMs went up, and car would not continue forward. What could the problem be?

It sounds like a sensor issue. Since the check engine light came on, have the computer scanned to identify what trouble code is coming up. That should direct you to the problem.

I neglected the car! The transmission shifts but very hard. I bascially have to do the process manually (2-3rd) as of recent. IS there any small steps I can try? Tried to flush the system but no help. Would you suggest a rebuild. Would like to sell the car. ANY ADVICE?

Hi whyknotfl,

If the trans is equipped with a trans throttle pressure cable, try adjusting it. Slacken off if the shifting has harsh shocks, tighten if it is slipping.

If it is the fully electrocnically controlled trans, try running it for a longer period of time if it has been parked for a long time. You can try taking the linear solenoid out and give it a good cleanup but all these would not help if the 2nd and 3rd shift valve is sticky. You would have to rebuild it, or at least have the valve body serviced which means stripping the trans almost completely.

I have a 1997 honda accord 4 cyl.2 weeks ago on my way home from work, the transmission started slipping. It seems like when you accelerate to go on on ramp to frwy, or when I slow to turn then speed up it slips, also I noticed that there is noice comeing fron transmission, like a buzzing sound or ticking sound, can you give any suggestions?

Sounds like you might have a fluid leak and the level is low. When the pump draws up air instead of fluid, it will make a whining sound, and that is likely to happen when cornering because the remaining fluid washes away from the filter / pickup screen.

Start by checking for wetness under the transmission. A common point to leak is the pan gasket and that is not a very involved repair. Axle seals can leak too, but usually the fluid level won't go down real far.

If no leak is found, suspect a plugged filter. They typically should be replaced around every 36,000 miles.

Have you had the computer scanned to identify the trouble code? Most parts stores will do it for free, and it should identify where the problem is coming from.

Have that done and let me know what you find.
