My check engine light is flashing. Prevousily when the light has come on I added a quart of oil and it would go out after driving a day or so. Now that the light is flashing the car sputters when first starting off from an idle.

Hello,

Typically the engine light will be illuminated due to an issue with a sensor regards to the engine management system. It could also be for emission issues.
When you are low on oil, the low oil light comes on.

As your light is flashing you will need to get the vehicle scanned for trouble codes.
You can take it to you local auto parts store and they will scan it for your and give you the code(s).

Knowing the codes can help with the diagnostics.

As you mentioned that the engine sputters as you accelerate, it could be due to spark plug misfiring under load (acceleration). If the plugs are worn and old it can do that.

It will be a good idea to inspect the plugs for wear and check the gap of the plugs.
The spark plugs should be gapped at .043 in.

I have attached diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
