Today I was driving my car and the car died suddenly but it started back up without me touching the switch. This happened twice. I noticed a burning smell but kept driving the car. The car quit again and I noticed smoke coming from the steering column. I immediately shut the car off and called for a tow truck. When the car was home, I got in the car and it cranked and ran. I am afraid to drive the car but not sure what could be causing this. P.S. This happened several months ago (car quit and restarted on it's own) but never saw smoke until today. Please help!

Hello !

The smoke could be caused by the ignition switch.

(sparking. Shorting and arcing) check that first.

More likely it`s faulty.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I replaced the switch today and it took care of the problem. Again thanks a million!
