Brakes problem
1996 Honda Accord 4 cyl Automatic

hey I asked you a question a few days ago about white smoke and oil in the spark plugs. We took it to get fixed and it was what you had said it was. But when we were bringing it back the brakes started failing like a mile before we got home. It had done it before we took it to get fixed but now it gets to the point where you are pressing the brakes all the way but it wont come toa complete stop. It will slow the car down slowly but it wont stop so we had to use the hand brake until we got home. We checked the brake fluid and it is ok. What do you think is the problem. Thanks for your help.

Hi fcortes626,

Does the brake pedal feel very hard?
Is the pedal height very low when depressed?
Is the engine rpm high or surges when brake is depressed?

The brake pedal doent feel hard it feels very soft. "I put the hand brake on and pressed it a couple of times like pumping it and it gets harder. It gets to the point that im pressing it all the way and it wont cometo complete stop. I dont know if it is because the car wasnt used at all for like 2 months and the brakes have rust or something. The pedal height is fine. They work fine at the begining but then they start to fail. Im not sure about the rpm I didnt really check on that.

If the brake pedal is firm and brakes are not effective, the most common cause are the brake pads. They are not biting and one of the most common cause is pad quality. Some would improve after the pads heats up.

Not using the car for 2 months can cause the problem as rust has formed on the rotor and this will cause the pads to skim over the rust instead of holding the rotor to stop the car.
