When I start my car in the morning I know that it should have a higher idle than normal about 1500 rpm, But recently when I start the car my idle races up to about 2800 rpm and the drops to about 1500 rpm only to repeat this cycle for the next 20 minutes. It only takes 5 minutes or so to warm up the car as we live in Vegas. But this still continues for another 15 minutes and then everything reverts to normal. What's wrong with my car? Thank you very much.

Hi jpbwana,

The idling speed is too high and possible causes are :

1. Low coolant level.
2. Faulty IAC or clogged coolant hoses to it.
3. Faulty Fast Idle Thermal Valve or clogged coolant hoses to it.
4. Leaking vacumns, not likely if the idling reverts to normal after it warms up.
5. Idle adjust screw working itself loose.
