Mileage 297,000 manual trans. The other day my son and I replaced a corroded thermal valve, noting the direction of the valve. The car ran fine before the installation of the valve except for the coolant leak. When we started up the car it ran fine with the choke working as it should. There were no coolant leaks so we took it out for a test drive and when we returned the car's idle was at 2000k and would not come down. We checked and all vacuum lines were attached and the choke appeared open. Could it be we purchased a defective thermal valve?

Thermal valve or you talking about the thermal vacuum valve and if so then I would recheck all the vacuum lines (there are a lot of them on this car) and make sure you have them in the right order on the valve. You can pinch (with your fingers) the vacuum lines see if any of them make a differnce in how the idle runs. That might help you narrow it down.

I take this another way and suspect you are talking about the thermostat on the cooling system. If I am right that would mean you lost fluid and did you replace it? Did you purge the cooling system of air?
