Hesitation, backfires, and cuts out while driving

Hesitation on initial movement. Backfires on acceleration and cuts out periodically while driving. Tough time accelerating. Does not do it all the time. Replaced plugs and wires recently. Number one spark plug was fouled.

I would suggest starting with the following article that discusses backfiring and how to address possible causes. Based on the fouled plug however, it sounds like your issue is most likely ignition related.
