1998 GMC Sonoma gas guage

My gas gauge just started moving after it hit like 80 miles; it jumped from over full to 3/4 of a tank I'm thinking it may be getting ready to go out. What part should I be looking for and how would I check to see what the problem is?

Most likely just a failing fuel level sensor which is built into the fuel pump on top of fuel tank but detailed test steps are below for diagnostics..
