How do I release the tension on the serpentine belt. The manual says to rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and/or slowly release the tensioner. How does one accomplish this task? If I pry on it, I chance damaging the belt. I'm attempting to replace the alternator.

OK you will need to rent or buy a drive belt tensioner tool then you will be able to do this. Now the tensioner is automatic so there is always tension on the belt. So you rotate the tensioner and pull the belt then slowly release the tensioner pull the belt out then put the new belt back in to the point of alternator and pull the tensioner back again and put the belt in and slowly release the tensioner again and check belt alignment and your done. Here is a diagram of the routing and you will see where the tensioner is too.
