Gas gauge does not work

I bought a 1993 gmc sierra pick-up with a 350 engine. 120,000+ miles(need to know how to connect the speedometer too!). The gas gauge does not work. I'm not a mechanic but I want to learn. Where do I start?

If it doesn't work at all, it could be a number of things. However, if it does work but isn't accurate (i.E. Will move around from full/empty and everyplace in between) call a mechanic. Working with a tank w/an undeterminable amount of fuel in it is not easy or safe if you don't know what you're doing. If it were me, I'd rather someone else deal with those hazards.
