2004 GMC Envoy fuel guage

When you go to fill up, the guage goes to empty and the light comes on. After driving for a while, it finally moves to 3/4 or other reading. I have tried a new cap.

I don't know what you were expecting the gas cap to do for the gauge but your probably looking at a bad sending unit in the tank. You can test the rest of the circuit by unplugging the tank and grounding the signal wire. I think it's purple. Then momentarily turn the key on. If the gauge spikes to full, the rest of the circuit is good.
