I have a 1997 Grand Prix SE, with a 3.1, 6 Cyl. Engine and 117,000 miles as the original owner. This morning my car would not start after repeated attempts. The engine would crank the shudder and die. After having it towed to my regular repair center. They examined it and found that I needed a new fuel pump. They stated that the job on this car was labor intensive and quoted me a cost of 750.00-800.00. Is this a Fair estimate for this work?

Boy that shure is a lot of money! My Daddy says these fuel pump jobs can get real spensive. He's bettin that probably includes the time to find out why your car was so cranky. He thinks the fuel filter is included in that too, cause manufactures don't want their pump to go bad from a plugged filter. Hopefully you're getting an AC Delco pump, cause thats what they came with. Maybe the tank has a buch of gas in it too and they has to drain it out so they don't strain themselves tryin get get it out. That one that you're getting probably comes with a fuel tank sending unit, or hanger in mechanics terms. Daddy says thats about right, and he says that even though it's a lot of money, it's only a couple of car payments.

It is inside the fuel tank and the tank has to be removed to access it.

Hello, I'm Danny.

Sorry, there is no access point you will have to drop the gas tank to gain access to the in-tank fuel pump. Here is a tutorial showing what is involved for replacement:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-replace-an-electric-fuel-pump

I've attached a few pictures below of its description. Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

REMOVAL

Before servicing the fuel pump the fuel system pressure must be relieved, see MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Raise the car on a hoist.
Remove the fuel tank, see FUEL TANK AND FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT.
Remove the fuel tank sending unit and pump assembly by turning the cam lock ring counterclockwise. Lift assembly from the fuel tank.
Pull the fuel pump up into the attaching hose while pulling outward away from the bottom support. Take care to prevent damage to the rubber insulator and strainer during removal. After the pump assembly is clear of the bottom support, pull the pump assembly out of the rubber connector for removal.
NOTE: Inspect the fuel pump attaching hose for any signs of deterioration. Also check the rubber sound insulator at the bottom of the pump. Replace damaged or deteriorated parts.
