Just replaced the fuel pump and the car starts but it feels like it loses power, continuously chugging.

Hi,

Is the check engine light staying one when the engine is running? If so, you need to scan the computer for diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video showing how it's done:

Now, I realize most people don't own a scanner; however, most parts stores will scan it for free. So, if the light stays on, have this done.

Next, it has a lot of miles, so it can be a few other things. Was the fuel filter replaced at the same time as the pump?

Is there any rattling coming from the exhaust that may indicated a faulty catalytic converter blocking the system? That can cause a problem with power. Take a look through these two links:

Let me know.

Joe

There is no check engine light and yes I did replace the filter as well and there isn't any rattling coming from anywhere in the car. It does start up but sounds as if it's about to shut off, kind of like a chugging sound. I was thinking maybe the spark plugs but I don't see why that would have anything to do with the fuel pump. Anyways hope this information helps.

Hi,

You know, I think we should check the fuel pressure to confirm it is producing the pressure needed. I'm sure that isn't something you want to hear, but even a new one can be bad.

Here is a link that explains how it is done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-fuel-system-pressure-and-regulator

If you let me know if this is a 4 cylinder or a 6, I can provide the directions specific to your vehicle.

Also, if it is possible, open the hood and start the engine. Record what it is doing so I can hear it. It may help me diagnose the issue.

I will watch for your reply.
