Hi I was driving home in my 1998 hilux 2.7 petrol and it all of a sudden started to cough and splutter like it was running out of fuel and then once I pulled over it completely stopped running. I rang my mechanic and he said to hit the bottom of the fuel tank and it started and drove fine for a day now it's completely stopped and won't start what's wrong with it? Fuel pump!

Your mechanic has hit it in one I feel, often when fuel pumps fail a sharp knock will free it up and get you going for a short time, often just enough to get home or to a mechanic, get the pump changed and remember to replace the filter as well, if the fuel looks murky and contaminated flush the tank as well.
