Hello, I had a leaky fuel injector plus they were getting old, so I replaced all eight, the truck was running great prior to me changing the injectors other than a rich code, now that I have replaced them, I have the most violent idle misfire I have ever witnessed sputtering bucking absolutely no power if you have any opinions, please let me know.

Hi,

Have you scanned the computer again to see if there are new codes? Are there any fuel leaks? Have you confirmed the wiring connectors are to the correct injectors? If you look at the pic below, it shows each fuel injector wire color to the PCM and the cylinder. Make sure they weren't mixed up.

Next, there is a splice to power near cylinder 7. It's in the engine wiring harness. That is where all the red wires which power all the injectors are spliced together. Make sure that wasn't damaged.

Let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe

See pic below. Also, if possible, record the engine cranking and then running and upload it so I can hear what it's doing.

Okay, now this is what I have done, truck was running so ruff sputtering and everything so I have had a lot of trouble with the driver side, so I put the old injectors on that side now, and now the truck seems to be running better other than a slight backfire when I let off the throttle, but exhaust smell is horrible would it be wise just to put the old ones on the passenger side as well maybe that would clear it up? Ran a scan no new codes other than just the same rich code.

Hi,

What code are you getting? Also, how would you best describe the exhaust smell? Does it smell rich, like rotten eggs, or have a sweet smell?

Let me know. Also, if you have a live data scanner, could you check the short-term fuel trims and let me know what they are?

Also, take a look through this link. I think you'll find it of interest.

It may be an issue with the catalytic converter. However, a P0171 indicates a lean mixture on bank 1. Is that the side with the new or old injectors? Is the PCV connected properly with no leaks and the air inlet tube between the air filter and throttle body? Are there any leaks?

The rotten egg smell is likely related to the converter, so I would suggest testing the converter as smelling the exhaust won't be sufficient. Here is a guide that will help with this:

If the old injectors were leaking, raw fuel would have gotten into the converter which will damage it. That is why I'm thinking that is a problem too, in addition to a lean mixture.

Let me know what I can do to help. Also, make sure to check for a vacuum source for bank 1. Keep in mind, if there is an exhaust leak before the converter, that can cause a lean mixture signal from the oxygen sensor. I know these engines are known for exhaust manifold leaks.

I will watch for your reply.

Joe

Hi,

Does it have a dual exhaust system or is the Y pipe still being used? Also, by any chance do you have a live data scan tool? If you do, could you let me know what the short-term fuel trims are? I'm not sure if oxygen sensors have been installed back into the exhaust, so let me know that as well. One last thing, are there any exhaust leaks near the exhaust manifold? Have you checked for engine vacuum leaks? That can cause a leak mixture. Since it is limited to bank 1, that is why I am questioning an exhaust leak.

Here is a link to help locate vacuum leaks related to the engine:

Let me know.

Okay, sorry it has taken me so long to get back with you. After tinkering around tonight with it I realized that when I pushed the pig tail hard with pressure the engine would actually idle smoothly until I let go. So, I took all the injectors out and put all the old back in it and it's running like a brand-new truck now. Thank you so much for all your time and help through these past few days. The pig tail clicked into place after realizing that they weren't connecting fully to the new injectors. The old ones clicked right into place.

Hi,

First, you are very welcome, but you did all the work, not me. LOL I'm glad to hear it's running properly for you. Good job.

Please feel free to come back anytime in the future if you have questions or need help. You are always welcome here.

Take good care of yourself.
