The other day I was messing with my radio on my 1999 Mercury Cougar and a wire touched the back of the radio, and now my car doesn't even attempt to crank when I turn the key, the headlights don't come on either, but all the interior lights are perfect. It's almost like it doesn't notice the key is in the ignition. I heard it was a fuse, then it was my starter, and now someone is telling me it is the brain of the car that I fried, please help

A year, model, and mileage are always a good way to start a thread. I assume you have a late model with a PATS type key security ignition. You might try reprogramming the key.

Good luck and let us know. :)
