AC Not blowing cold

2001 Ford Windstar, 62K V6-My AC blows out warm air only. I took it to get serviced and they filled up with Freon and gave back to me. A week later, it was blowing cold again. I can hear he compressor kicking on. I took it to get service again and now they say the compressor is bad. Is this possible? Could it have blown cold with Freon if the compressor did not work?

The compressor does only kick on for a short time. They did NOT say it was leaking. They only said that the compressor is bad and that is why it will not work
