2000 Ford Windstar knocking

I heard knocking start at the upper part of the engine sonds like underneath the manifold. Also can you feel with your hands whether a rod is attached or not on top of the engine?

This sound is it a ticking, tapping, thuddding and thumping and increases with rpms?

Its a rapping sound. Sounds like a belt but maybe a rod or rocker. This happen with these vehicles?

With the engine running and the rapping noise present, get a long
screwdriver and place the handle against your ear or other part of
your head so that sound will conduct through the screwdriver, then
start placing the screwdriver against various accessories until you
hear the one making the most noise. It will be evident right away
what the source is.

Could also be a piston slap-Try running the engine while disconnecting plug wires one at a time to located where the most noise is coming from
