1988 Ford Thunderbird check engine light

I just hand this car handed down to my kids. The problem is that the check engine light stays on. The car runs fine. He stated that this check engine light has been on forever. What do you recommend I do first to get this light off. I know that it could be several things. The 02 sensor and etc.

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.
