1993 Ford Tempo Downshifts hard

My 1993 Tempo upshifts fine but when I slow to 40 mph it downshifts from 3rd to 2nd with a loud "clunk". Got any suggestions?

Thank you for the donation.

The symptom described is consistent with internal pressure leakage of the trans.

1. Worn bearings/bushes in the trans due to fatigue is causing pressure leakage or
2. The valvebody or solenoids are not working smoothly resulting in inconsistent movement when downshifting.
