Air cond. Problem

I have a 2005 ford Taurus. 3.0 liter w/66,000 mi.
The air cond. Comp. Will just

stop running when ever it feels like or does not come on at

all. If I keep messing with the knob it eventually comes on.

It's not a freon problem because when it runs it will freeze

you out of the car. Could it be a sensor problem or a switch

problem. How do I determine what's going on?

2 things you really need to check, hook up a set of manifold gauges and take the readings, not the temp and humidity at the time. Then turn the system on and get the readings, with a/c on max, count how long the clutch stays on for, between cycling. Is the system a/c or temp control?
