Electrical problem
2004 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

about 2 yrs ago battery wouldn't charge, work from home so not driving alot. Replaced battery and that worked for a few months bad fuel cell? And replaced bat. Lasted few months then car would have to be driven every4 days to keep running. Symptoms were turn key hard start or start and all running lites on dash were there and wouldn't go out. Turn off and restart lites went out, sometimes it would give poof sound on start. Took it in to local and he said a parasitic wiring prob. Needed a smart junction box?As he had traced the wires and said it was fuse 37 I think? As it needed to be programed I went to ford and they put in this smart box and reprogrammed that was mar 31 car ran fine till this am as it seemed to ride rough
died in shopping center and a guy jumped me and said u need gas, car had 3/4 tank when I drove 2 miles it store not the gauge said 13 miles to empty when to gas station got 15.00 (47.00 to fill) then GG read full? Drove 15 mins to try and charge bat came home and was sitting in drive and had food on break was in park and watching this same gauge going down 244, 241, 239 took foot off break it stopped put foot back on and it started down again.
my? Is what is the real problem? Does this smart box with fuses control this gas read out on the dash?
no computer lites on dash ever come on to say what the problem is. Had fords for yrs and on our other one only needed to replace the oxygen thing once but I am ill about this new car as I don't want to keep putting bucks into something that isn't gonna run or I have to drive every other day, thanks

Alley cat, can you please post this with ONLY the pertinent info? I am having a very hard time reading this. Smart box? Lets start with a question from me to you ok? Is your check engine light on? If I understand you, the battery isnt charging now, and it will crank but not start? I await your reply, and am willing to see you thru this!

For about 3 yrs now my battery seems not to be charging, replaced battery and replaced bat again because garage said bad fuel cell. After that

Was having to drive 1/2 hour to keep it charged.
No ck engine lite (question is there a way to override the computer so that the ck eng lite doesn't ever come on again? I think the dealer did this because of a oxygen sensor that kept coding even after they replaced it, another story).

Symptoms got worse this past 6 months. Hard start with all dash lites coming on and on 2nd try
started fine.
Took it local guy and he spent 6 days (said I had a parasitic drain in the electrical. Found it on fuse? 37 in the smart junction box. He could replace but couldn't program it (only charged me 168.00 cause he felt bad that he couldn't do this for me) took it to dealer and they had me out in less than 2 hours (after they said 3-4 hours 2 to install and hook up and 1 hour to program? Ran really great and on 9th day died in parking lot. Gas gauge read 13 miles to empty and I had 3/4 tank. Got 15.00 and then tank read full.
Came home and put car in park stepped on break pedal our of habit and the gas readout on dash then said 329 to empty 249 to empty etc next day totally dead with just click click noise.

Did some research online and the brake wire and this gas read out are in the SJB. My? Is did they cross wires on install do u think?

I know a wiring problem is very difficult to find.
I take it back to the dealer this tuesday and I'd like some idea? Should I have the dealer run for any coding?
Thanks

There is a tech bulletin about no charge condition, the reflash the PCM to fix that, but your problem sounds like an instrument cluster problem to me. I will email a PDF about the battery issue, Ford may need to reflash the pCM and look into the cluster problem. Check your email!
