1. Make and Model of your car - 2001 Ford Taurus
2. Current odometer reading (approx) - 139000+
3. Stick Shift or Automatic Transmission - Auto
4. Strange sounds or smells (if any) - See below
5. Fluid leaks (if any) - None seen, but seems to burn oil (no blue smoke)
6. Past repair history (if applicable) - See below

For past year and a half, car would usually run fine, then we'd park and eat, or pick up kid at day care, then car would crank but not start. Usually let it sit for 15 minutes, then it would start right up.

Lately, when car would not start, we would let sit for about 1.5 hours, then it would start right up.

Last night, it again cranked but did not start at all - towed to dealer - this morning it started like always. Dealer now thinks I'm an idiot.

Fuel pump pressure gauge shows good pressure when car starts. We cannot recreate the issue at dealership.

One week ago, had dealer replace all 6 plugs (they were at end of life) and air intake valve. Worked fine for a week, then died last night.

Fuel pump seems to "buzz" as if it is pumping fuel when car is starting, but of course, I have no idea if it did not buzz when the car would not start previously.

Car now burns about 1.5-2 qts of 5W20 oil every 5000 miles, but I get no blue smoke from exhaust.

Is this a fuel pump problem? Any other valves, filters, timing, etc? I cannot keep getting randomly stranded with my kid, but I also cannot keep paying hundreds of dollars for random repairs that we "guess" may cure the problem.

Not yet ready to buy a new car, or a Honda. Thank you all in advance.

Sounds like your engine may be shot. I dunno if you want to take apart the engine and check the valves and piston's and basically have it rebuilt but thats what it sounds like with me. Fuel pump may be bad also but that wotn cause it to burn oil

I have same problem. 2000 Taurus w/101,000 miles. Check the Emergency Fuel Shut Off Switch, located in trunk, right side, under felt (there is a decal).
Jumpered out switch & fuel pump started (so did car).
